'She's virtually vanished into thin air': Barrie Police update case of missing woman

Police spokesperson says the possibility of human trafficking has come up

More than two weeks after she was last seen by a family member, Barrie Police continue to seek the public's assistance in locating 26-year-old Autumn.

"Anyone who may have attended the "Walk to End ALS" at Sunnidale Park on June 10 & may have photos or video from the Sunnidale Road and Letitia St. area btwn 10am-12pm to call at 705-725-7025 ext 2160," police tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Autumn was reported missing on Monday, June 12, and according to police communications spokesperson Peter Leon, she was last seen on Friday, June 9 leaving a family member's home in the area of Burton Avenue and Frank's Way.

Police say she was planning on spending the evening at the house of a friend, though the family did not have specifics about the location.

"But a message was received the next day and the family tried to follow up, and after that, the phone ceased operation," said Leon.

As for what was in that message, Leon said he couldn't speak to the specifics of it as it is part of the investigation.

"She's virtually vanished into thin air," added Leon. "

As for the tweet that was sent out on Tuesday about the ALS Walk at Sunnidale Park, Leon said investigators received information that Autumn may have been in the area of Sunnidale Park, in particular Sunnidale Road and Letitia Street between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 10.

Police did a search of the park last week and there was nothing located that could assist with the investigation.

The family has hired a private investigator.

"They're trying to do whatever they can, and they have reached out to see if they can get assistance from an external source," said Leon. "We see that from time to time in other jurisdictions. But at the end of the day, we believe strongly that somebody out there has information that will assist our service with this ongoing investigation."

Leon added that the possibility of human trafficking has come up.

"We know that regrettably, Barrie is one of those locations where we have seen human trafficking in the past, and we continue to sadly see it in the future. But right now, we are trying to pinpoint the whereabouts of Autumn and trying to do everything we can to locate her and reunite her with her family."
