Warming centres open to stranded travellers in parts of Simcoe County

Squalls and whiteouts have blasted areas close to Georgian Bay

Motorists who can't get there from here because of snow squalls in southern Georgian Bay and need a safe place to hunker down have some options.

Provincial police say facilities will be open Friday evening until Saturday morning. The facilities are equipped with washrooms and food.

  • Elmvale - Elmvale Community Centre - 14 George Street
  • Wasaga Beach- Wasaga Beach Recreation Hall - beside the arena at 425 River Road West
  • Stayner - Stayner Community Centre -269 Regina Street

Snow squalls have battered the area, resulting in a number of road closures and whiteout conditions.

As of 11 p.m., Friday, only County Road 91 from Duntroon to Stayner remains closed.

Environment Canada says the worst of the squalls will ease around midnight.
