Waterfront living: How to create the ultimate outdoor entertainment space

This Barrie 360 content is brought to you by On The Water Designs

If you live on the water, your backyard has built-in wow factor. But turning that natural backdrop into a space that works for hosting, relaxing, and everyday living takes a bit of planning.

Whether you’re entertaining friends, spending time with family, or just enjoying the view, here’s how to create an outdoor entertainment setup that makes the most of waterfront living.

1. Turn your dock into a destination

A dock is one of the most valuable features of any outdoor entertainment space — not just for boats, but as an extension of your outdoor living space. And with the right layout, it can double as an entertainment zone. Think about widening the platforms or adding deck extensions to create room for seating, a small table, or even a bar setup.

Lighting is also key. Add solar post caps, string lights, or low-voltage deck lights to instantly boost the atmosphere and make evening use safer and more inviting.

If you have a deck attached to your house, think about reconfiguring it to improve flow to the dock area. Creating a natural connection between the deck and the water makes the whole space feel more usable and inviting.

2. Create a defined dining area

An outdoor dining setup brings everyone together and it’s easy to build around. Choose a table and chairs that hold up to the elements (aluminum, teak, or resin wicker are all good options), and anchor the space with a rug or pavers to visually define it. If you get direct sun, a pergola or large cantilever umbrella can make the area more usable during the day.

Pro tip: keep the dining area close to your indoor kitchen, or set up a simple prep station outside to cut down on trips in and out of the house.

3. Add a fire feature for cool evenings

Even in summer, waterfront properties can cool off quickly in the evening. A fire pit or gas fireplace extends your outdoor season and makes your space feel cozy and complete. Choose a style that suits your setup — from a sleek modern bowl to a built-in stone pit — and surround it with comfortable, low-profile seating.

Make sure the fire feature is positioned with wind and view lines in mind. You don’t want smoke blowing across your seating area or blocking your sightline to the water.

4. Plan for shade and shelter

You can’t always count on perfect weather, so build in a few options to make the space more usable. Pergolas, retractable awnings, or shade sails offer sun protection without closing in the space. For sudden showers, a covered section with seating means the gathering doesn’t have to move inside.

This kind of coverage also helps protect your furniture and makes cleanup easier after a party.

5. Keep it flexible

Not every gathering looks the same — so design your space to adapt to different types of outdoor entertainment. Mix built-in elements (like a grill station or seating wall) with moveable pieces you can rearrange as needed. Stacking chairs, lightweight loungers, and foldable tables give you options for hosting a crowd or keeping things low-key.

And don’t forget storage. A well-placed deck box or weatherproof cabinet keeps cushions, gear, and games organized and out of sight when not in use.

6. Add lighting that works after dark

Good lighting makes your outdoor space safer, more functional, and a lot more inviting after sunset. Use a mix of overhead, task, and ambient lighting to cover all the bases. Think string lights for dining areas, path lights for walkways and docks, and wall-mounted or post lights for high-traffic zones.

If you're looking for low-maintenance options, solar lights are easy to install and don't require wiring. Smart outdoor lighting systems are another option if you want control from your phone.

7. Incorporate natural landscaping

A well-designed entertainment space should feel like it belongs in its surroundings — especially when you're on the water. Use native plants, grasses, and stone to create soft transitions between hardscaping and shoreline. This not only adds visual appeal but also helps reduce erosion and runoff.

Stick to low-maintenance landscaping to keep the focus on the view and cut down on yard work. Raised planters or container gardens can also add greenery without cluttering the space.

8. Make space for lounging

Not every zone has to be set up for hosting and outdoor entertainment. A quiet lounge area gives people somewhere to relax between activities or wind down after dinner. Place a couple of chaise lounges or a sectional away from the main foot traffic, ideally with a view of the water. Add side tables for drinks and consider a small outdoor rug to define the area.

If you want to get a bit more luxe, a daybed or hanging chair brings in resort-style comfort — especially in shaded spots.

9. Don’t forget about sound

Waterfront properties often have ambient sounds from wind, waves, or boats. And most of the time that is one of the attractions. But for days when you’d rather listen to music or podcasts, a discreet outdoor speaker system can help set the mood and give your space more personality.

Choose weatherproof models and keep the volume moderate — loud sound can travel over water more than you might expect.

You don’t need a full audio setup. A couple of strategically placed Bluetooth speakers can go a long way, especially when paired with a solid playlist.

Why it pays off

A great waterfront space isn’t just about looks — it’s about how it functions. The right layout can make your property feel bigger, more welcoming, and easier to enjoy every day.

And when it’s time to host? Everything’s already in place.

By investing in smart upgrades like docks designed for entertainment, defined zones, and weather-friendly features, you can turn your waterfront property into a go-to spot for gatherings, quiet evenings, and everything in between.
