The upcoming holiday weekend means more people will be travelling across Ontario, whether it's heading to cottage country, visiting family, or taking a day trip. While the roads are expected to be busy, local athletes and community organizations are making headlines for very different reasons.
This week, Barrie roller derby athletes are preparing to represent Canada on the world stage, CAA is reminding drivers to look at their own habits behind the wheel, hundreds of women are gearing up for a charity slo-pitch tournament, and soccer continues to gain momentum across Simcoe County.
Here's what Barrie's talking about this week.
Ontario Drivers Urged to Look at Their Own Habits
With one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer approaching, CAA South Central Ontario is encouraging drivers to focus on their own behaviour instead of criticizing everyone else.
A recent survey found many Ontario drivers believe others are responsible for unsafe roads while overlooking their own risky habits.
Experts say distractions, speeding, aggressive driving, and failing to stay familiar with your vehicle remain common concerns.
Before hitting the road, CAA recommends checking tire pressure, fluid levels, and vehicle maintenance. Drivers should also eliminate distractions, plan their route, and allow extra travel time to reduce stress.
Taking responsibility behind the wheel can help make holiday travel safer for everyone.
Barrie Roller Derby Athletes Earn Team Canada Spots
Two talented young athletes from Simcoe County are heading to the international stage.
Payton, known on the track as "Coleslaw," and Danya, who skates as "d'Gremlin," have been selected to represent Team Canada at the 2027 Junior Roller Derby World Cup in Scotland.
The pair skate with the Simcoe Junior Roller Derby League and impressed selectors through their skill, determination, and commitment to the sport.
For both athletes, earning a place on Team Canada is the reward for years of training and dedication. However, getting to Scotland comes with significant travel costs, so fundraising efforts are already underway to help make the trip possible.
Their achievement also shines a spotlight on roller derby, a sport that combines athleticism, teamwork, and strategy while continuing to grow in popularity across Canada.
Dirt in the Skirt Returns to Barrie
From the track to the diamond, another popular community tradition is back.
The annual Dirt in the Skirt charity slo-pitch tournament returns to the Barrie Sports Complex with 24 teams and approximately 300 women taking part.
Founded by Jenny Hastie, the event combines friendly competition with fundraising while creating a fun weekend that celebrates community spirit.
Players often embrace creative uniforms inspired by classic baseball, making the tournament as entertaining for spectators as it is for participants.
Beyond the games themselves, the event continues raising money for local causes while bringing hundreds of people together.
Soccer Interest Continues to Grow Across Simcoe County
Soccer is enjoying another surge in popularity throughout the region.
The success of the Simcoe County Rovers FC, combined with excitement surrounding TFC 2 matches in Barrie and increased attention on international soccer, has encouraged more children and adults to get involved.
According to the Barrie Soccer Club, interest in both youth and adult programs continues to grow.
Local clubs say the recent excitement surrounding global soccer competitions has inspired new players while encouraging former players to return to the sport.
As participation increases, local organizations hope the momentum will continue long after this summer.
