The Canadian Cancer Society is seeking more volunteer drivers to help patients make their appointments.
Wheels of Hope is a program part of the Canadian Cancer Society that helps patients get the life-saving treatment they need.
Mark Kahan is the recruitment coordinator for the Wheels of Hope program and he is asking for help from drivers in the Simcoe County and Muskoka area.
“If you’ve got a couple days, a day to spare in a week or a few days a month to spare, please consider signing up for the Wheels of Hope because we need drivers from all over,” Kahan said.
The program also offers mileage reimbursement for their volunteer drivers along with tax receipts.
Oftentimes the drives can be extremely beneficial for both the volunteers and the people they are transporting. The trips give the volunteers the opportunity to meet many interesting people.
“We hear from our volunteers that a lot of times they get more out of this experience than the people they’re transporting. And it’s sort of a win-win for both the volunteer and the people that need to ride to their treatment,” Kahan said.
Drivers who are interested in signing up to volunteer must have a good driving record and a criminal background check done to ensure the safety of people being transported. Sign-ups are available at cancervolunteer.ca or by calling 1-888-939-3333.
