It's been a year since Barrie lost its own "Million Dollar Man" Will Dwyer.
For over 40 years, he was a monumental supporter of Terry Fox Run and, in 2019, reached his goal of raising a Million dollars for the event. Shortly after he achieved that goal, he revised it to $2 million.
Will Passed away in May 2022 at 96, leaving a legacy for friends and family.
His family continues his work by fundraising to reach the $2 Million mark.
Will's son Robert says that starting Saturday, May 20, they will be at the Barrie Farmers Market to meet with supporters and get their campaign started.
"Dad went to the farmers market for nearly 20 years every Saturday from May through September for the run. Everybody that has supported Dad, I want to thank you because last year's total was $75,000 and change. And that's a huge step towards our goal."
In addition to the Farmers Market appearances, several other events are in the works, including a Will Dwyer Memorial Golf Tournament in Borden.
The event is already sold out, but Robert says they need prize donations for the raffle table, with all proceeds going to the cause.
Later this summer, firefighters from Borden are planning a walk from Borden to Barrie.
Dwyer explains, "they did that walk in 2019, which spread a lot of awareness on Will and the Terry Fox Foundation. The walk date still needs to be set, but it'll be either August or September. Meanwhile, the Borden firefighters, which I retired from, are reaching out for a boot drive that'll also be in August."
Robert says he is overwhelmed by the support his dad continues to receive.
"I was fortunate enough to take dad around for the last three years, and I saw how big an impact he made on people all over the community. And for something like this to just die? It won't happen as long as I'm here." Rober says.
