First case of Omicron variant in York Region is a child under 12

Health officials say the case is travel-related

A confirmed case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant in York Region.

Public health officials say the region’s first case is a child under 12-years-old from Vaughan, and it is travel-related.

Officials say the child returned to Canada on Nov. 22 from southern Africa.

The youngster is isolating at home. Health officials are doing follow-ups with close contacts, who are also self-isolating.

There have been four cases of the new variant in Ottawa, with cases also reported in Durham and Halton.

The York Region case is believed to be the seventh confirmed case of Omicron in Ontario.
