This past weekend brought the coldest temperatures of the young winter season, but it did not bring anywhere close to safe ice on area waterways.

On Monday, the York Regional Police Marine Unit posted on X that it was aware that members of the public were venturing onto the frozen water of Lake Simcoe on foot.

"The thickness of the ice on Lake Simcoe can vary based on currents below the surface and temperatures above," police stated. "At this point in the season, the ice is still unpredictable and members of the public are advised to refrain from walking on Lake Simcoe."
