Barrie to pick 47th in 2025 CHL Import Draft, Moose Jaw picks first

The Barrie Colts' first-round pick in the CHL import draft will be at 47th overall, followed by 108th and 169th overall. Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Warriors will have the first-overall selection.

2025 will be the first time Moose Jaw will have the first-overall selection after finishing with the worst record across the CHL at 15-45-6-2 (38 pts.) in 2024-25. It's just the second time the Warriors are picking within the top five.

With its first-round pick in last year’s CHL Import Draft, Moose Jaw selected Dominik Pavlik 53rd overall. Other notable selections by the Warriors include NHL alumni Pavel Kubina and Tomas Fleischmann, as well as Martin Rysavy, who played a key role in helping Moose Jaw capture its first WHL championship in 2024.

The Peterborough Petes are picking second after posting an OHL-worst 18-41-4-5 (45 pts.) and the QMJHL's lowest Victoriaville Tigres (17-43-1-3, 38 pts.) will pick third.

Barrie finished with a 42-22-2-2 record, tied for the 13th-best in the CHL. Fifteen OHL teams will pick above them in the draft order

New for the 2025-26 season, CHL teams will now be permitted to carry up to three import players on their rosters. That means the Import Draft will expand to three rounds. Under the revised rules, a club with no current import players may select up to three players, but may not select to carry more than the limit.

Barrie carried two import players on the roster in the 2024-25 season (Emil Hemming, Gabriel Eliasson), leaving the Colts one open import spot ahead of the draft.

Many players have gone on to successful major junior and pro careers after being selected in the CHL Import Draft. One notable example is Andrei Svechnikov, currently of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. The Russian forward was Barrie's first overall selection in the 2017 CHL Import Draft, and went on to be Carolina's second overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Other notable selections by the Colts in the CHL Import Draft include former NHLers Jan Bulis (1995, second overall), and Alexander Burmistrov (2009, 12th overall).

Teams can trade selections ahead of the draft, but they must be finalized two days before the draft. 

Since the first CHL Import Draft was held in 1992, over 2,170 players from outside of Canada and the United States have been selected.
