Ontario Provincial Police say a driver who attempted to flee after their pickup truck crashed into a hydro pole in Tiny Township was restrained by nearby residents.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Macavalley Road following a report a pickup had left the road and struck a hydro pole. The impact caused the truck to flip onto its side, and it was emitting smoke.

Police say nearby residents saw the driver attempting to flee the scene and they were able to capture and hold him until officers arrived.

The suspect's driver's licence was suspended, OPP said, for seven days due to a warn-range alcohol reading.

The 41-year-old from Tiny Township was also charged with dangerous operation, drive a motor vehicle without a licence, and driving a motor vehice in contravention of conditions.

"The Ontario Provincial Police appreciates the assistance and vigilance shown by members of the public during this incident. Community involvement can be helpful; however, public safety must always be the priority. Citizens are reminded to only assist in situations where it can be done safely, as attempting to physically restrain individuals can place you at risk of harm," police said in a news release.
