Details
Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is a full-service community hospital serving Midland, Penetanguishene, and the broader North Simcoe-Muskoka region. Established through the voluntary integration of Huronia District Hospital and Penetanguishene General Hospital in 2008, GBGH carries over a century of combined healthcare tradition under one roof. The hospital's guiding vision, Exceptional Care to Every Person, Every Time, shapes everything from frontline patient services to long-term planning.
Our History
GBGH's origins go back to October 1992, when the two founding hospitals formed the North Simcoe Hospital Alliance with a shared goal: to collaboratively maximize health care resources and deliver the best quality hospital care to residents of North Simcoe. Role changes and service integration followed in 1996, and after a community-wide vote in December 2009, Georgian Bay General Hospital was officially named as the unified organization.
The Midland site has roots dating to 1905, when a 12-bed hospital first opened in Sunnyside. After several moves and name changes over the decades, the modern Huronia District Hospital opened in 1976. The Penetanguishene site's history stretches even further, with healing traditions tied to the earliest Jesuit missions in Huronia. Incorporated in 1911, it was later operated by the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception beginning in 1942, who helped stabilize and grow the hospital for decades. The Penetanguishene site closed in February 2022.
