The Barrie Fire Department credits two young people who they say alerted a mother and daughter that their Berczy Street home in the city's east end was on fire.
Deputy Fire Chief Ed Davis says the mother and daughter were preparing supper when they got a bang on the door.
Davis tells Barrie 360 they had a number of calls around 6:30 Tuesday evening from neighbour's about extensive black smoke in the air.
"The first initial crews found heavy smoke and fire in the back corner of the building."
The fire is deemed to have been accidental and electrical in nature.
There is no word if the home had working alarms.
A damage total was unavailable but the Ontario Fire Marshal will not be called in.
