Construction is moving forward on a new affordable housing development in Gravenhurst, bringing six much-needed transitional homes to the community as part of a broader effort to address housing challenges across Muskoka.
The project, located at 575 First Street South, is scheduled to break ground this month, with the new units expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of summer.
The development is part of the District Municipality of Muskoka’s “Big Move on Housing,” a $30 million investment aimed at accelerating local housing initiatives and reducing homelessness throughout the region.
“This project is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about people,” said Jeff Lehman, Chair of the District of Muskoka. “Everyone needs a safe place to call home and a chance to move forward. 575 First Street South reflects our commitment to providing housing with the supports people need.”
Designed for stability and support
The six new units will be energy-efficient and designed to offer residents not only stable housing, but also access to essential community supports. Officials say the development is intended to create a pathway toward greater well-being and long-term housing security.
By focusing on transitional housing, the project aims to help residents bridge the gap between temporary housing situations and more permanent living arrangements.
Community invited to learn more
Residents interested in learning about the project and sharing their thoughts are invited to attend a “Construction Café” on Wednesday, June 3 at the Gravenhurst Public Library.
The drop-in session will take place in the library’s meeting room at 180 Sharpe Street West from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Community members can speak directly with the project team, receive updates, ask questions, and enjoy a free coffee in a casual setting.
