Rather than escape on foot, two men tried to swim away from Barrie Police when officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter on a boat at the city marina on Lakeshore Drive around 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say a 33-year-old of no fixed address attempted to escape by jumping into the water, and he was followed by a 73-year-old who also took the plunge but struck his head on a rock.

The pair were arrested as they came out of the frigid water.

The men have been charged with break-and-enter, while the senior has also been charged with four counts of breach of probation.
