Barrie Police said Monday that remains found at Berczy Park are believed to be human.
Police said officers were called just before 1 p.m. on Friday after a worker in the area discovered bones in the downtown park located on Berczy Street.
The remains have been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for further analysis.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for later today.
"As the investigation continues, both the east and west walking path entrances to Berczy Park remain closed to the public," police said in a news release.
The park is accessed from Peel Street in the area of Sophia Street East, and from Berczy Street in the area of Queen Street.
Police added that further updates will be released as they become available.
In September 2024, the City of Barrie issued notices to individuals living in a homeless encampment at Berczy Park, which was subsequently cleared by municipal and police officials as part of enforcement of city by-laws.
