The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are stepping up enforcement as Operation Safe Driver Week gets underway Sunday.

From July 12 to 18, officers will focus on dangerous driving behaviours including speeding, improper lane changes, following too closely, impaired driving and other reckless actions.

The annual campaign is led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and promotes safer roads through education, awareness and enforcement.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says so far this year on OPP-patrolled roads, 45 people have died in 35 collisions involving commercial motor vehicles.

In 2025, 8.826 collisions investigated by the OPP involved commercial motor vehicles, and of those collisions, 77 were fatal, claiming the lives of 95 people.

Schmidt says the biggest problem with commercial vehicle collisions is following too closely and making unsafe lane changes.

He added that nearly a quarter of collisions investigated by provincial police involve commercial motor vehicles.

Police emphasize that whether you are a commercial or non-commercial driver, collisions caused by unsafe driving behaviours are preventable.
