One of Ontario's oldest farmers' markets is celebrating a remarkable milestone this weekend, as the Barrie Farmers' Market marks 180 years of service to the community.
Established in 1846, the market has been a gathering place for local farmers, food producers, artisans and small businesses for generations. The anniversary celebration takes place Saturday, July 18, at Barrie City Hall, recognizing nearly two centuries of supporting local agriculture, entrepreneurship and community connections.
The morning-long event will feature live entertainment, family-friendly activities and recognition of the people who have helped sustain the market over the years.
Local musician Sean Derraugh will perform live clarinet music from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the Northern Jewel Cloggers will take to the market square with performances at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The official anniversary celebration begins at 10 a.m. and includes remarks from Mayor Alex Nuttall and Downtown Barrie Councillor Craig Nixon. Visitors can also enjoy complimentary birthday cake, with slices available to the first 180 attendees, courtesy of Homestead Artisan Bakery.
As part of the festivities, the market will honour several long-standing vendors with milestone awards, recognizing their years of dedication and contribution to both the market and the broader community.
Throughout the morning, families can explore more than 70 local vendors offering fresh produce, meats, baked goods, handcrafted items and locally made products, while children can take part in activities designed especially for younger visitors.
“Celebrating 180 years is an incredible honour and a testament to every farmer, vendor, volunteer, Board member, and customer who has contributed to the Barrie Farmers' Market's success over the years,” said Alison Oakes, Operations Manager of the Barrie Farmers' Market.
“This milestone isn't just about our history—it's about celebrating the people who continue to keep the market thriving each and every week. We invite the entire community to join us as we celebrate our past, recognize those who have built our legacy, and look ahead to the future of local food and agriculture in Barrie.”
Market organizers say the event will proceed rain or shine. They also noted the current moderate air quality conditions tied to ongoing wildfires in parts of Ontario and encouraged visitors to monitor local conditions and make decisions that are best for themselves and their families.
