The Barrie Baycats’ game at home against the Welland Jackfish that was scheduled for Sunday night was postponed because of rain in the forecast for Springwater.
It was rescheduled for the night of Friday, Aug. 21 at Athletic Kulture Stadium. An Afro Night promotion in the ballpark will carry over to the new date.
With high volumes of rain considered a near certainty throughout the afternoon and evening, the Baycats announced Sunday's postponement more than seven hours before the scheduled first pitch.
The scheduled starters for Sunday — newly-signed Baycats right-hander Naswell Paulino and Welland star righty Teodoro Ortega (4-2, 3.95 ERA) — will likely have their starts pushed to later in the week.
The third-place Baycats fell 5-4 in Hamilton on Friday night, when the Cardinals came back from a four-deficit in the late innings, eventually walking off the Baycats on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly by Reyny Reyes.
Barrie has beat the first-place Jackfish in all four previous matchups and has not swept a season series with them since they moved to Welland from Burlington in 2019.
The teams will have one more game in Welland on Thursday before closing out the season series on the makeup date in Midhurst.
