A 36-year-old Barrie man is facing multiple charges after police say he sped through the city, twice refused to stop for officers, and eventually crashed.
Police say it started around 11:20 Monday morning when an officer spotted a vehicle speeding through a red light at John and Anne Streets. The driver briefly pulled over on George Street before making a U-turn and fleeing the scene. Due to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic, officers chose not to chase the vehicle.
About 40 minutes later, police spotted the same vehicle on The Queensway travelling southbound at highway speeds. Police say officers tried again to stop it, but the driver maneuvered around a police cruiser and kept going. Again, officers did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety.
Then, the vehicle crashed into a light post. The driver tried to run but was arrested after a brief foot chase.
The accused has been charged with two counts each of dangerous operation and flight from a peace officer, and one count each under the Highway Traffic Act of failure to remain, driving while under suspension, and failure to stop at a red light.
