Two men are facing impaired driving charges after separate incidents in Barrie over the weekend.

On Saturday night, police were called to a Bayfield Street restaurant after staff reported a heavily intoxicated customer had driven away and nearly hit an employee.

Not long after, police say officers found the vehicle parked on a sidewalk along Bayfield Street.

They say the 73-year-old showed several signs of impairment, including slurred speech, poor balance and the smell of alcohol.

Police also say the vehicle was uninsured and had no valid permit.

Then, around 3:30 Sunday morning, officers were called to Hickling Trail residence about another suspected impaired driver.

They found a 29-year-old from Barrie sitting in a running vehicle in a driveway on Cumming Drive.

Police say he admitted drinking, showed signs of impairment and allegedly tried to strike another officer while being arrested.

They say cannabis was also found readily accessible inside the vehicle.

The accused was charged with a pair of impaired driving offences, and one count each of assault with intent to resist arrest and driving a vehicle or a boat with cannabis readily available.
