Simcoe County conducting controlled burn in Clearview forest following 2025 ice storm damage

The County of Simcoe is conducting a controlled burn today in a section of the Nottawasaga Tract forest in Clearview Township as part of an ongoing effort to restore areas damaged by the 2025 ice storm.

The burn will take place on approximately five hectares, or 12.5 acres, of County Forest located at 793455 County Road 124.

County officials say the operation is aimed at removing debris and brush left behind after damaged trees were cleared following the severe ice storm. The accumulated material has created a fire hazard and has limited access to the site for future reforestation work.

The controlled burn will help eliminate excess debris while supporting the long-term restoration of the forest's natural ecosystem. The area will be replanted and remain part of Simcoe County's 34,000-acre municipal forest network.

Smoke is expected to travel toward the northeast, east, or southeast during the operation and could linger into the following day.

Residents may notice a visible column of smoke from several kilometres away.

No road closures or significant disruptions are expected as a result of the burn.

Health officials are advising residents who may be sensitive to smoke, including children, seniors, and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic lung disease, to take precautions. Recommended measures include staying indoors if smoke is present, reducing outdoor activities in affected areas, and keeping windows and doors closed.

Controlled burns have been used in Simcoe County previously, including operations in the Tosorontio Tract in 2021 and the Packard Tract in Essa Township in 2020.

County officials note that prescribed burns are carefully planned and managed by trained professionals and differ significantly from uncontrolled wildfires.
