After 37 years in policing, South Simcoe Police Chief John Van Dyke is preparing to call it a career.
The Bradford West Gwillimbury/Innisfil Police Service Board says his retirement takes effect on Jan. 29, 2027. His last day at the helm will be Dec. 22.
Van Dyke has been with South Simcoe Police Service since it was formed in 1997, serving in roles including general patrol, criminal investigations, recruiting, professional standards, courts and community services.
He has also supported the broader policing profession through Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police committees and community boards. In 2015, he served as security planning lead for the Pan Am Games Shooting Centre hosted by Innisfil.
Board chair Chris Gariepy says Van Dyke has made a lasting impact on the police service and the communities it serves.
“Throughout his career, John has demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, with a genuine commitment to the people he serves and the members who serve alongside him,” Gariepy said.
Gariepy also called Van Dyke “a respected colleague, mentor and leader” who has dedicated much of his life to the service and the people of Bradford West Gwillimbury and Innisfil.
The board will begin the process of finding the next chief, with a focus on ensuring a smooth transition and continued effective policing.
