A 29-year-old Aurora man is facing a slew of charges including impaired driving after a vehicle plunged into a construction hole on Duckworth Street near Howard Crescent in Barrie.
"On Monday, July 24, 2023, at 9:47 p.m., the Barrie Police Service received information about a motor vehicle that had been travelling northbound on Duckworth Street at a high rate, entered into a well-marked construction zone, struck a mound of dirt, became airborne and crashed into an excavation hole coming to rest upside down," police said in a news release on Tuesday.
The driver was able to crawl out of the hatchback and was taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
He has been charged with the following:
- Operation while Impaired
- Operation While Impaired over .80mgs
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon.
Police allegedly seized a knife and brass knuckles.
The motorist was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on August 30, 2023.
Six young people were killed last August when the vehicle they were in wound up in a construction pit on McKay Road and caught fire.
A contractor has been charged with six counts of criminal negligence causing death, police alleging the company failed to properly sign and barricade that site.
