A 37-year-old Barrie resident has been charged after a vehicle failed to stop for a school bus in Meaford.

Grey Bruce OPP say officers investigated the incident Thursday on Highway 26.

Police say the vehicle passed a stopped school bus while its overhead red lights were flashing and its stop arm was extended as children were boarding.

The driver has been charged with failing to stop for a school bus under the Highway Traffic Act.

Under the act, motorists must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Drivers approaching from behind must stop at least 20 metres away and remain stopped until the signals are no longer activated and it is safe to proceed.

A conviction can result in a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.
