Barrie Police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles after a home security camera captured someone checking door handles in an east-end neighbourhood.

Police say they received an online report Wednesday, November 4, after the individual was seen checking the doors of several vehicles around 5 a.m. in the area of Bellevue Crescent.

There is no indication anything was stolen.

Police say many thefts from vehicles happen when someone simply walks through a neighbourhood or parking lot, tries door handles and takes whatever they find inside an unlocked vehicle.

That can include wallets, electronics, garage door openers and personal information.

Police are offering a few reminders to help prevent these types of thefts:

  • Lock your vehicle every time you leave it, even if it's parked in your driveway.
  • Take valuables such as cash, wallets, phones and electronics with you.
  • Keep garage door openers out of sight.
  • Don't leave spare keys inside your vehicle.
  • Close your windows, even when the doors are locked.
  • Double-check that your doors are locked before walking away.

Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious activity, including anyone seen checking vehicle door handles.

Police say not to approach the individual. Instead, take note of their appearance, direction of travel and any vehicle information, and contact police.

The Barrie Police Service says thefts and attempted vehicle break-ins can be reported through its online reporting system.

Anyone witnessing a crime in progress or facing an immediate danger should call 911.
