Barrie is getting a new elementary school and the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) needs a name.
The school, located at 210 Dean Avenue, is set to open in the fall of 2027.
When sharing name submissions, the board is encouraging consideration of the environmental setting, the community’s geographic history, and the diversity of the school community.
"A school’s identity is important – it is a source of pride for the community and contributes to a positive and inspirational climate and school culture," the school board wrote in a news release. "This is something that can be felt when you walk into the school every day. The identity also influences the school’s image, including its branding, logo, and mascot."
Barrie's new school will be in the area of Mapleview Drive East and Dean Avenue, within the Hewitt’s Creek corridor. The board describes the landscape as originally consisting of rolling terrain, wetlands, woodlots, agricultural lands, and creek networks that supported local ecosystems.
Those looking to suggest a name must complete the submission form before Nov. 27.
The board is also looking for community members to join its School Naming Committee, and those interested are asked to complete the form no later than Nov. 27.
The school name will be announced following Ministry of Education approval, the SCDSB says.
Similar naming contests are ongoing for new schools in Angus, Alcona, and Orillia, all on the same timelines.
