Noxious substance released inside Barrie store, man charged

Police say store security was attempting to stop a suspected shoplifter

A man from Earlton in northern Ontario is facing a slew of charges after Barrie Police say a noxious substance was released when store security attempted to stop a shoplifting suspect at Walmart on Bayfield Street on Saturday.

Police say security got the worst dose of the pepper spray substance, though it did linger in the air requiring ventilation by firefighters.

The store was not evacuated.

The next day, the 32-year-old suspect was arrested and booked on a number of charges.
