Carnegie Days takes a page out of its history with a Book Club theme this year.
The gallery has partnered with the Barrie Public Library, downtown branch, and the Simcoe Contemporary Dancers on the programming for Carnegie Days. The festival kicks off with the annual MacLaren Legacy Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 26. It honours Joan Lehman for her long-time contribution to the gallery and community and features special guest speaker Steve Paikin, an award-winning journalist, author, and documentary producer.
The Simcoe Contemporary Dancers pick up the theme with ‘Stories We Share', choreographed performances that explore poetry, shared experiences and stories. Carnegie Days also includes film, visual arts, and lots of bookish activities as readings, poetry, and ‘Spoken Word' Performances by youth.
MacLaren's Art for Lunch series on Friday features Toronto artist Derek Sullivan who will be talking about the construction of books during the print process and it includes his series of poster drawings.
One of the most popular activities at Carnegie Days is the Sunday Family Workshop. This year, regional artist Heather Riley leads a workshop where participants create personalized bookplates using drawing and stamping techniques. The workshop is ideal for children age three to eight. A series of National Film Board screenings also unfold on Sunday. The short films are themed around Stories of Place and many are animated.
Carnegie Days runs from Sept. 26-29. Most take place at the MacLaren Art Centre and the majority are free of charge.
