Even with all the troubles in the world right now, it is unfortunately not enough to deter the lowest people in our society from trying to prey on the vulnerable.
Just today, my household received two separate robocalls claiming to be Health Canada explaining that our credit cards were about to be cancelled. What Health Canada would need with our credit cards, I'll never know. Clearly being a scam, we hung up and the two numbers were blocked but I'm sure that won't be the last we hear about it.
Again, it is very sad that on top of the other worries, we also have to be on the lookout for scams but thankfully there are a few things you can keep in mind to protect yourself. Firstly, be diligent about any companies, charities, are salespeople that reach out to you, even if already do business with them. Second, never volunteer any personal information over the phone, even small things like your name, spouse's name, or email address. Lastly, if you are worried about the chance of a call being real, hang up, look up the number yourself (don't use a callback number they provide), and make an inquiry.
