Woman killed in Midland fire identified

A second person suffered second-degree burns

Police say a woman killed in an apartment fire in Midland last week has been identified.

She is 51-year-old Susan Pedwell of Midland.

OPP officers saw flames coming from a downtown building at 475 Dominion Avenue just before 9 a.m on Friday.

They contacted the fire department and then attempted to reach the occupants using their fire extinguishers, who were trapped in apartments above an empty commercial building.

One man was pulled to safety. He was transported to hospital with second-degree burns.

Firefighters located a woman in another building, but she later died of her injuries.

The two officers that entered the structure were also transported to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The Ontario Fire Marshal continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
