While he's no stranger to superhero films, having played the world's greatest detective in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Christian Bale will be turning in his hero's cowl for a villain's cape.

Bale will be lending his Oscar-winning acting chops to the fourth film in the Thor franchise: Thor: Love and Thunder. He will be playing Gorr the God Butcher, a newer addition to the Marvel comics (having only been introduced in 2012), who, after inheriting his powers from an ancient weapon, is set on exacting revenge on all gods after his family is killed by one.

Thor: Love and Thunder is being directed by Taika Waititi, who helmed the last film, Thor: Ragnarok. Many consider Thor: Ragnarok to be one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Taika Waititi is sure to work some magic with Bale on the other end of the camera.

However, the film is still a while off with a planned release date sometime in the first half of 2022.
