They grooved and they moved.
Seven celebrity dancers including Amy Aust of 107.5 KOOL FM stepped out of their comfort zone for Easter Seals as the charity raised more than $85,000 at a fundraiser in Barrie on Thursday night.
Charlene Myke, manager of development for Central Ontario Easter Seals, says this money opens the door to many opportunities.
"It's about making sure that we're creating dignity, independence and freedom for our children with physical disabilities, through funding of equipment, our fully accessible camps, and our scholarship programs."
Myke says there were many Easter Seals kids and their families at the event, and she believes most people left the room with a better understanding of the kids.
Using the pandemic as an example where isolation became the new normal, Myke says "welcome to the life of an Easter Seals child."
"They quite often don't get invited to birthday parties, sleepovers, to cottages and movies," she explains. "For our kids, isolation is a day-to-day routine for a lot of them."
An auction was also part of the evening and enough money was raised to send close to 11 children from the community to an Easter Seals summer camp.
"We had an amazing event," says Myke. "Again, the community got behind us. There is no better place than Barrie."
