You can now tell your family it's "Taco Tuesday" without fear of repercussions!
Taco Bell has liberated the well-known phrase for other restaurants to use.
In case you didn't know ( cause I sure didn't), the term Taco Tuesday was trademarked by the U.S Franchise Taco John's since 1989 in the U.S.
A few months ago, rival chain Taco Bell said they would be going to court to free the trademark term for all to use.
The fight over the trademark didn't make sense to Taco John's, who say they are dropping its rights to the term and it's free for others to use.
In a statement, its CEO said, "We've always prided ourselves on being the home of Taco Tuesday, but paying millions of dollars to lawyers to defend our mark just doesn't feel like the right thing to do."
The statement goes on to say they'll have better use for their money, including donating it to worthy causes. "We have decided to begin sharing Taco Tuesday with a pledge to contribute $100 per location in our system to restaurant employees with children who are battling a health crisis, death or natural disaster."
Taco Bell responded, saying they were happy with the outcome. "This is a shared victory with taco allies everywhere. Taco John's decision to join the movement and liberate Taco Tuesday means countless businesses big and small, restaurants, and taco vendors can now embrace, celebrate and champion 'Taco Tuesdays' freely."
