A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection to a "violent assault" that happened in Barrie, city police say.
Detectives from the Barrie Police Service Human Trafficking Unit started an investigation into the reported incident last Monday.
"An independent sex trade worker ... reported, that while at a local hotel, she was violently assaulted by an unknown male who arranged a visit with her through a texting application," officers said in a release.
On Friday, a suspect was arrested in Melancthon. He was charged with aggravated assault and assault by choking. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

"As part of the ongoing investigation, a Criminal Code Search Warrant was executed at his property," officers continued. "Members of the Barrie Police Service Human Trafficking Unit believe that there may be further victims who may have possibly had similar interactions with the man responsible for this incident."

"The Barrie Police Service is committed to protecting independent sex trade workers, and those working in the sex trade that may be victims of human trafficking, by providing support and resources as required, and hold those who harm or mistreat sex trade workers criminally responsible for their actions," officers said.
