Barrie:
Due to the heat warning that was issued by Environment Canada, the City of Barrie will make all public facilities available (during normal operating hours) for cooling centres. The cooling centres will remain open until the heat warning is lifted.
During a high heat alert, the public are reminded to:
- Rest frequently in shaded areas.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car.
- Dress in cool, loose clothing and shade your head with a hat or umbrella.
- Check regularly on family, friends or neighbours who are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses and who do not have air conditioning.
- Seek shelter indoors or in the shade.
Here are some other ideas on how to beat the heat:
- Visit one of four beaches along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay. Only Centennial and Johnson’s Beach have lifeguards in the summer, however, lifeguards are currently not on duty. Lifeguarding season begins on Friday, June 28. Residents are reminded to practice water safety; there is no substitute for parent supervision. Stay within arm’s reach, swim with a buddy and get trained. Visit barrie.ca/beaches for more information.
- Visit one of the pools located at the City’s recreation centres. Visit barrie.ca/Dropins for pool schedules.
- Visit the splash pad at Lampman Lane Park or the water feature at Heritage Park.
- The City’s recreation centres and libraries are open and available to the public during regular operating hours.
Innisfil:
– Following the heat warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Town of Innisfil is opening cooling stations.
The cooling stations will be available at the following Innisfil ideaLAB & Library branches during operating hours until the heat warning has ended:
- Cookstown Branch - 20 Church Street
- Lakeshore (Alcona) Branch - 967 Innisfil Beach Road
- Stroud Branch - 7883 Yonge Street
According to the alert, hot and humid conditions are expected through most of the week. When temperatures are high, overexertion will increase the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, or heat stroke. During periods of heat, you should look for ways to stay cool and protect your health. Anyone is welcome to also come to Innisfil Town Hall or the Innisfil Recreation Complex during operating hours to cool down.
Everyone can get sick from the heat, but some people are at higher risk because of factors such as age, health problems, or their job. Residents are encouraged to check in on family and friends who are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat to make sure they’re staying safe. Orillia:
Due to the heat warning in place, the City of Orillia has opened air-conditioned cooling and hydration centres for public use. The City encourages anyone – especially those susceptible to extreme heat – to make use of the centres. The cooling centres will remain open until the heat warning is lifted.
