The City of Barrie recently entered into an agreement with Durham Region Transit (DRT) to trade buses, resulting in efficiencies for both transit agencies.

On August 16, 2023, a fire at DRT’s Raleigh Avenue Garage resulted in the loss of 19 of their 40-foot conventional buses, significantly impacting their service levels. To replenish their fleet, DRT reached out to various Ontario Transit Agencies for assistance. The City of Barrie responded, leading to a mutually beneficial trade agreement:

  • Barrie Transit provided DRT with three, 40-foot conventional buses, which will assist DRT in maintaining service.
  • In return, DRT offered Barrie three, 26-foot cutaway (smaller) buses. These buses support the City’s Transit ON Demand service expansion.

Both agencies collaborated closely to ensure the trade is completed smoothly, exchanged vehicle maintenance records, conducted inspections of the vehicles at the respective garages, and confirmed that all vehicles involved in the trade are in good operational condition with significant service life ahead of them. Further details of the agreement can be found in the staff report from February 2024.

“We’re so pleased we were able to partner with DRT on this mutually beneficial agreement,” said Brent Forsyth, Director of Transit & Parking Strategy. “The agreement efficiently enhances transit services and demonstrates great inter-agency cooperation.”
