An Innisfil driver is facing charges after being arrested twice in under 24 hours, with police saying he struck a child on a bike in one incident.

Officers with the South Simcoe Police Service responded to a call on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. about the collision involving the child.

They say it happened at the intersection of Webster Boulevard and Innisfil Beach Road.

"The child was located, treated on the scene by paramedics, and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries," police stated in a release on Monday.

"Witnesses reported that the vehicle was travelling at inconsistent speeds before abruptly accelerating and hitting the child. After being confronted by witnesses, the driver fled the scene. It was learned that the accused is currently sentenced to three separate indefinite Driver's Licence suspensions in the province of Ontario."

The driver, a 33-year-old Innisfil man, was located by police later and arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Prohibited x 2
  • Fail to Remain
  • Careless Driving Cause Bodily Harm
  • Drive While Suspended x 3

He was released with a future court date.

The following day, around 12:30 a.m., police were alerted by an iPhone crash notification to a crash in Innisfil at Lockhart Road and 25th Sideroad.

They say a vehicle was found overturned on its side with the driver trapped inside. The driver, the same 33-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital after being extracted by Innisfil Fire & Rescue.

"The investigation revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which had been airborne briefly, suggesting a high rate of speed," officers said. "A warrant was sought for the driver’s blood to check for impairment."

He was charged with:

  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking
  • Operation While Prohibited x 2
  • Drive While Suspended x 3
  • Dangerous Operation

The accused was held in custody for a show cause hearing.

"The South Simcoe Police Service would like to remind the public that more than 90 per cent of road crashes are a result of human error or condition," officers added.

"This means that road crashes are entirely preventable. Slow down, stay in control and arrive safely at your destination."
