Firefighters with Barrie Fire and Emergency Service knocked down a blaze at a Blake Street duplex Tuesday evening.

Eric MacFadden, assistant deputy fire chief, told Barrie 360 they were called to the scene, east of Cook Street, just after 8 p.m.

According to MacFadden, no one was home at the time, but an occupant in the connected unit of the duplex evacuated.

"They were altered by a passerby who noticed the smoke and knocked on the doors," MacFadden explained. "They also opened the door to the unit [with the fire] and let a dog out, and then our crews assisted in removing some cats."

He added that one of the cats was administered oxygen.

MacFadden says the fire originated in the kitchen - causing heavy damage - while the rest of the home sustained smoke damage.

"Our determination would be combustibles too close to a heat source," said MacFadden. "But there's nothing suspicious."

He says occupants will be displaced for a few days.

There is no damage total at this time.
