Sarah Mahoney's dream was to open a business.
While Mahoney was taking her commerce degree at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), the Barrie resident wasn't sure what type of business she wanted to manage, but over the years she decided on something that would guarantee she'd be rolling in dough.
On Saturday, Mahoney, owner and head pastry chef, joined her team to celebrate the official opening of her downtown Barrie business, Butter Bay Pastry House.
Online, the business is described as a "grab and go" pastry shop.
Behind the scenes, Mahoney and her team of bakers are all Georgian College graduates, four from the pastry course, and the other is a culinary grad.
"Georgian chose me," Mahoney said, explaining that she came to Barrie with her husband and kids when his business got located here. "Georgian is a great school and it was time to see what it was all about."
Mahoney enroled in the pastry program.
"It's a great program, and you learn a lot of stuff in one year. The techniques my staff gained in the program is incredible."
The grads are now putting those skills to the test, excited to be tempting taste buds.
"I have always loved laminated dough," said an excited Mahoney, as the Dunlop Street East shop quickly filled up with customers. " That's butter rolled into the dough. I would say to myself that I am going to open a bakery that is going to have croissants, danishes, and puff pastries."
Mahoney says they try to incorporate a lot of colour into their pastries with very seasonally inspired flavours.
"Comfort food, really," she added.
