The City of Barrie has awarded the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka the Per Door Grant to support its youth transitional housing project, an important initiative aimed at addressing the housing needs of vulnerable youth in Barrie and the surrounding area. This project will be a key component of the New Barrie YMCA centre of community, designed to foster inclusivity and support for young people.
The Per Door Grant is part of the City of Barrie’s Housing Community Improvement Plan (CIP), which offers flexible financial assistance to incentivize the development of affordable housing and purpose-built rental projects.
"Barrie is committed to ensuring every young person has the opportunity to succeed, and safe, stable housing is a critical part of that,” shared Mayor Alex Nuttall. “By investing in the Y’s Youth Transitional Housing project, we are helping to build a brighter future for at-risk youth in our community. This initiative goes beyond simply providing a roof over their heads—it opens doors to education, skill development, and a strong sense of belonging. We’re proud to partner with the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka in creating lasting solutions that address both the housing needs and overall well-being of our city's next generation."
The Youth Transitional Housing project is part of the YMCA’s broader vision to create an inclusive and sustainable centre of community at 535 Bayview Drive. The three-story housing complex will feature 12 units, including two fully accessible suites, each equipped with private washrooms. The housing initiative will provide young people with a secure environment, as well as access to educational and developmental programs offered in partnership with local school boards and other community organizations. This holistic support network aims to reduce youth homelessness and foster a sense of belonging within Barrie’s growing community.
"We appreciate the council and staff from the City of Barrie for their grant and continued support, recognizing the critical need this project addresses in our community," said Jill Tettmann, President and CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. "This grant is a significant step toward building a brighter future for our community’s youth. With this support, we are able to offer young people facing barriers the stable housing and resources they need to thrive, pursue education, and develop essential life skills."
The Per Door Grant from the City of Barrie adds to the financial foundation that has been built for this project. In addition to the $5.5 million raised through the YMCA's community capital campaign, they have secured support, including $29.9 million from the Province of Ontario and $4.5 million from the sale of the former Grove Street site.
This project is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision for the future. We look forward to continuing to work with the City of Barrie and our many partners to bring this transformative project to life.
