A person with Down syndrome has three copies of the 21 st chromosome instead of two. This is not a disease or disorder, it is a naturally occurring genetic condition that is present in approximately 1 in 800 people born in Canada, and it is universal across race and gender. The effect of this extra chromosome varies from person to person. Down Syndrome may result in speech impairments, cognitive impairments and physical developmental delays. Many individuals with Down Syndrome live well into their 50s and 60s and lead fulfilling lives. People with Down syndrome attend school work, and contribute to society in many ways.

Each year on March 21st, we come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, a day officially recognized by the United Nations in 2012 and In Ontario in 2016. The date 03/21 holds particular significance, as it symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome, a characteristic of Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21. World Down Syndrome Day is a day to raise awareness, promote understanding, and show our support for individuals with Down Syndrome.

Join in the celebration and wear your most colourful, quirky socks! Let’s stand together to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Share your photos on social media with the hashtag #WDSD to spread the love and raise awareness.

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day this year, the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County is holding a flag raising at Barrie City Hall (70 Collier Street, Barrie) at 4PM. We would love to invite the local media to come and cover this event and help us share awareness about World Down Syndrome Day with the community.

Should you have any further questions about World Down Syndrome Day or the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County, please feel free to reach out.
