The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society are launching a heartwarming initiative to help more animals find loving homes. From Sept. 26–28, adoption fees will be reduced by 20 per cent—and waived entirely for senior pets—during the iAdopt: Furever Homes event, presented by HomeEquity Bank.
The three-day province-wide campaign aims to connect people and pets, so both can thrive, with a special focus on matching senior animals with adopters aged 55 and up.
“Older Canadians are living vibrant, active, connected lives,” says Niary Toodakian, Vice President, Customer Insights and Brand at HomeEquity Bank. “They show us that age brings the wisdom, compassion, and commitment that makes them the perfect pet owners.”
Why senior pets make ideal companions
Despite their many qualities, senior animals are often overlooked in shelters. Calm, well-mannered, and typically house-trained, they’re a great fit for older adults seeking steady companionship. Research shows that pet ownership can boost mental and physical well-being, reduce loneliness, and foster a sense of purpose.
“Pets offer so much more than just companionship. Research consistently reveals pets provide a sense of purpose, routine, physical activity and a reduced sense of loneliness some older adults may experience,” says Toodakian. “They bring routine, physical activity, and emotional connection.”
Not ready to adopt? Fostering makes a difference
For those unable to adopt, fostering offers a meaningful way to support animals in need. It’s especially timely for empty nesters adjusting to quieter homes as kids head off to school.
