The City of Barrie is declaring a Winter Maintenance Event for November 28, November 29, and November 30. Starting overnight tonight, no on-street parking is allowed to ensure that maintenance crews can effectively clear the streets from the expected snowfall. Environment Canada has issued an orange snow squall warning for Barrie, indicating a multi-day snow event.
This means that on-street parking is NOT allowed on city streets from 12:01 to 7 a.m., and from 3 to 6 a.m. within the Downtown Business Improvement Area, starting tonight. This is also in effect for overnight on Friday (November 28), overnight on Saturday (November 29), and overnight on Sunday (November 30). The city’s on-street seasonal parking restrictions begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, December 1 and are in effect until March 31.
On-street parking restrictions are usually in effect in Barrie from December 1 through to March 31 so that city streets can be cleared of snow and so that emergency vehicles have access, but Winter Maintenance Events can be declared outside of the December 1 through March 31 time period, or on December 24, 25, and 31. These events are declared when anticipated weather requires snow plowing, sanding, salting, direct liquid application, snow removal or other winter maintenance operations. Snow plowing
The city has planned levels of winter road service to combat the diverse weather conditions that Barrie experiences. Priority and secondary roads are serviced when at least five cm of snow has fallen, with cleanup completed approximately six to eight hours after the end of snowfall. Residential roads are plowed when there is at least eight cm of snow with cleanup being completed 12 to 24 hours after snowfall ends.
Sidewalk plowing
Sidewalk plowing is done on main sidewalks when five cm of snow falls and on secondary sidewalks when there is eight cm of snow.
Residents are reminded that parking on lawns is not permitted at any time, year-round. Vehicles must be parked on the driveway, in compliance with the city’s Zoning By-Law.
