Barrie police went to a residence at a townhouse complex at 177 Bayview Drive near Little Avenue around 3 p.m. on Wednesday in response to a well-being check, where in the unit they say officers located a 10-year-old child who was dead. The child's mother, age 47, was also found inside the residence and was taken to a local hospital, where she remains.
The Barrie Police Major Crime Unit has taken over the criminal investigation, police said in a news release on Thursday. The release stated that there is no threat to public safety.
"Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits," police said.
