A 19-year-old Montreal man has been charged by provincial police as part of a grandparent scam investigation in Gravenhurst.

On Tuesday, a man called police to report someone had called him claiming to be his grandson, stating he had been in a collision and required a significant amount of money to avoid charges. Another person came on the phone claiming to be a lawyer to make arrangements to attend this individual's home and collect the cash.

Officers responded to the home and arrested a suspect.

He has been charged with:

  • fraud over $5,000
  • possession of property obtained by crime
  • conspiracy to commit an indictable offence

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge.
