I rode AlpenFury at Canada’s Wonderland — and it was absolute chaos (in the best way)

AlpenFury Canada's Wonderland

AlpenFury isn’t just Canada’s Wonderland’s newest roller coaster. It’s the tallest, fastest, and longest launch coaster in the country — and it holds a world record for the most inversions on a launch coaster. That’s nine flips, twists, and rolls. And yes, your stomach feels every single one.

I got to experience it firsthand — and talk to the creative team behind the madness. Here’s what you can expect …

A wild start: Launched straight into a mountain

AlpenFury sets off and the first launch hits instantly, shooting you into the base of Wonder Mountain so fast you barely register what’s happening. Before you can catch your breath, the second launch blasts you vertically through the summit, shooting 50 metres into the sky.

You get a split-second view of the park, then it's all loops, flips, and free-falls from there. The first time you ride it, you’ll likely have no idea what’s happening or where you are.

But, as Clayton Lawrence, Corporate Creative Producer at Six Flags explains, “As you ride it more and more, it becomes more exciting because you know what's happening and can prepare for the next element.”

It’s intense. But surprisingly, it’s also smooth. No headbanging, no jarring stops — just a fluid, high-thrill ride from start to finish.

9 inversions, 3 custom elements & no time to think

AlpenFury doesn’t let up. Just when you think you’ve recovered from one element, you’re upside down again.

There are nine inversions total, including three unique to this ride: the Fire Serpent Roll, Skyflyer Loop, and Ice Winder Roll. They’re unlike anything I’ve ever experienced on a coaster.

“Even somebody who's been on inversion loops all their life — these are going to be new,” said Nina Kozlowska, Social Media & Digital Manager at Six Flags. “It goes so quick, you don’t even register the first launch before the second launch happens.”

It’s disorienting in the best possible way. At one point I was yelling, then laughing, then upside down, then wondering how I was already back at the station.

A deep dive into the story

What makes AlpenFury stand out isn’t just the record-breaking stats — it’s the storytelling.

This isn’t just a roller coaster slapped into a plot of land. The ride is woven into the AlpenFest village, a newly re-themed area at the base of Wonder Mountain that throws it back to the park’s original 1981 vision.

“This really started as a project where we knew we wanted to blast the coaster out of the mountain and come off the top of it,” said Lawrence. “So we just went in and wrote the story custom to that experience.”

The backstory? A mysterious force deep within the mountain — a clash of fire and ice — powers the ride. As a visitor, you’ve arrived at just the right time — the village is buzzing with the fire and ice festival. It’s lively, vibrant, and full of celebration.

If you’re feeling brave, head to the sled haus, where a sleek, high-tech sled is ready to launch you straight into the heart of Wonder Mountain — and beyond.

It’s a simple but fun concept, and it gives the whole ride a sense of place.

Easter eggs, goats & glockenspiels

I’m a sucker for details, and AlpenFury has a lot of them.

A clock tower glockenspiel nods to the original theming from the ’80s, going off every 15 minutes. There’s even a goat figurine perched in the rocks — rescued from an old ride that operated in 1981.

“Our director of construction was explaining the scope to our creative team and our creative team remembered seeing this goat exactly how he's pictured it,” Kozlowska said. “We had it in storage… so they pulled it out and put it there.”

These throwback details aren’t just cute — they help tie the ride to the park’s history and give long-time visitors something to smile about.

Built for thrill seekers — but not just for them

Let’s talk numbers:

  • Height: 50 metres (164 feet)
  • Speed: 115 km/h
  • Inversions: 9 (most in the world for a launch coaster)
  • Length: 1,000 metres
  • Duration: 1 minute, 20 seconds (but the first time it feels like it is over in a blink)

It’s wild — but surprisingly accessible. Before getting on it myself, I assumed it would be too intense for casual riders, but Grace Peacock, Canada’s Wonderland’s Regional Director of PR, says that’s not the case.

“I think mom and dad would enjoy this just as much as their twelve-year-old kids,” she said. “Thrill seekers, people who love the coasters — I think everybody can get on this.”

After riding it my first time, I have to agree. Yes, my stomach flipped nine times. Yes, I screamed. But I will definitely be adding it to my list of must-ride attractions during future visits.

The verdict: Would I ride it again?

Absolutely. AlpenFury is insane — but in the best way. It’s fast, it’s smooth, it’s unexpected, and it’s just pure fun.

And honestly? It might be Canada’s best coaster yet.

One more thing…

If you’re planning to go, Canada’s Wonderland just dropped their 2026 Gold Passes (which includes parking) — and they’re kind of a steal.

“If you buy them, you can use them right away,” said Peacock. “So you get unlimited access to the park, Haunt, WinterFest, and all Six Flags parks across North America… even in Mexico.”

And yes, that includes AlpenFury. Over and over and over again.
