Apple AirPlay and Android Auto may lead to more distracted driving

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may be bigger driving distractions than pot or alcohol impairment.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may be bigger driving distractions than pot or alcohol impairment.

Researchers at Britain’s IAM Roadsmart, an independent road safety organization, found people using smartphone mirroring systems in a car display had slower reaction times than those who had used cannabis; and were five times slower than someone driving with the legal limit of alcohol in their system.

During the test, drivers using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto took their eyes off the road for an average of 16 seconds to fiddle with controls.

Using voice command operations was only slightly better.

The good news is drivers became aware of the distraction and modified their driving. Still, they were unable to keep a safe and constant following distance between a car up ahead. They also had a hard time keeping the car centred in the lane while operating the systems.
