Astronaut Dials 911 By Mistake

“I was a little disappointed that they had not come up”

Dutch astronaut André Kuipers says it wasn’t a pocket-dial, he just missed an important digit and wound up calling 911 from the International Space Station.

To reach the Johnson Space Center in Houston, orbiting astronauts have to dial 9 for an outside line, followed by 011 for an international line.

“I made a mistake, and the next day I received an email message: did you call 911?”

His slip-up set off a security alert at the Houston center with emergency staff checking the room where the space station’s line connected to Earth.
