Beau Akey of the Barrie Colts is on his way to Alberta.
The defenceman was selected 56th overall by the Edmonton Oilers at the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday.
His name gets added alongside Colts' prospect, Eduard Šalé, who was selected 20th overall by the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday.
Prior to Akey's draft day, the six-foot, 173-pounder told Barrie 360's Colts writer, Gene Pereira, that all he needed was one team to give him an opportunity.
“I’m not worried about going first round or seventh round, it’s just the opportunity that I’m really looking forward to,” Akey said. “I know I’ll take advantage of it."
His draft stock rose as this last OHL season progressed, especially during the absence of teammate Brandt Clarke who opened the season with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.
“I’m just trying to develop into a reliable two-way guy,” Akey said.
