An e-bike rider is in a trauma centre after sustaining "serious, life-altering" injuries from a crash, according to Barrie police, who also say another motorist drove through the scene and faces impaired charges.

Officers responded to the Tuesday report at around 7:30 p.m., with the collision occurring at the Dunlop Street West and Miller Driver intersection.

"Investigators have determined that a 23-year-old male was operating his e-bike northbound on Tiffin Street and failed to stop for a red light at Dunlop Street West," Peter Leon, Barrie Police Service communications coordinator, said in a release on Wednesday.

"As the e-bike operator entered the intersection, an eastbound motor vehicle that was turning left onto Miller Street from Dunlop Street West, under the direction of an advanced green traffic light, collided with the e-bike."

The e-bike rider was transported to hospital with serious injuries and later sent to a Toronto trauma centre.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone with dash camera video of the crash to contact Detective Constable Steele of the Barrie Police Traffic Unit at dsteele@barriepolice.ca.

Leon added that another incident occurred while the scene was closed off to traffic for investigators.

"At 9:35 p.m., a motor vehicle drove over pylons, road flares and around marked police vehicles with their emergency lighting activated and dangerously entered the collision scene," Leon said.

A 40-year-old Thornton man was arrested and charged with impaired driving. He was released from custody and is scheduled for court on June 17.

"The Barrie Police Service is reminding motorists that when there is a serious motor vehicle collision, police may be required to close the road or an intersection to allow for the investigation to safely take place.  Pylons, barricades, road flares and marked police vehicles with emergency lighting activated are utilized to indicate this closure, and detouring around the scene may be required," Leon stated.

"Although inconvenient at times, a closure is required to allow for the gathering of evidence, collision scene measurements and in some cases, to allow for collision reconstructionists to utilize available technology that enables them to determine what took place. During these unexpected closures, the Barrie Police Service values the patience and understanding of motorists and reminds the public that our investigators work in a manner that results in a road reopening as soon as the investigation safely permits."
